As we wave goodbye to the Phillip Island SuperSprint, all eyes are on the Perth SuperSprint in two weeks’ time. It has been a jam-packed calendar to date, so getting that extra week in the workshop means we ACTUALLY get a weekend off (and a long weekend at that).
With three rounds of the championship now done and dusted (and a sneaky AGP) there is still room for improvement in the Red Bull Racing Australia garage.
“I am keen to get to Perth and see how our car performs,” said David Cauchi, car #88 Race Engineer and J-Dub’s right-hand man.
“We weren’t super strong in Perth last year, but we have developed the car significantly since then, so we should see an improvement. It has been a while since we have stood on the top step so we best get to work and change that.”
Taking home P1 in the first race of the season, then to end up in the sand trap at Symmons Plains, it’s been a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows for the car #88 team.
“Overall I am happy with how we are working as a team. There is nothing standing in our way as such, as we have everything we need to be winning races. We just haven’t managed to put together a mistake-free weekend so far,” said Cauchi.
“With the championship being so competitive, the smallest of mistakes can have a massive cost. Once we tidy up these little errors we will see much more consistent results from car #88.”
There is no doubting the VF Holden Commodore has some serious speed, it’s been fighting it out for the top spot (alongside its teammate in car #97) in almost every race.
“Our race pace has been strong all year, which I am pleased about, and the three Triple Eight Race Engineering cars have produced some of the best racing all year, (which can get the stress levels up in the garage) but that’s what we want to see.”
Jamie Whincup currently sits in first place at the top of the 2016 V8 Supercars leader board, with his Triple Eight family not too far behind. With a difference of 15 points between first and second place, the competition is hungry and ready to jump on any opportunity to take the top spot.
“It is early days in the championship, so I am not thinking about it, but I would much rather be in front than behind at any stage of the championship. It is up to us to keep on improving the car and our overall weekend performances. We know how hard it is to put in a full year of consistent results, it is not getting any easier, but if it was easy we wouldn’t be doing it. “
The Red Bull Racing Australia team will be racing next at Barbagallo Raceway, Perth, May 6-8.
