6:20pm – Well… that was controversial. We are going to leave this one to the boys to tell you how the race unfolded.
JW finished up 3rd with a very wounded Bull (don’t worry, she’ll be looking brand new tomorrow). Hear how he got on:
“That was sweet and sour! I can’t remember the last time a safety car actually went our way. It came at the perfect time, we had just pitted for tyres, I had five-lap better tyres than all the cars around me and we were in the box seat for potentially the top step until unfortunately, team-wise, the restart wasn’t what we wanted. Car 97 (Shane van Gisbergen) was turned around and then I got caught up in it and just put massive amount of damage on the front of the car. It was crazy difficult to see, a few times I was running off the track all over the place just because I couldn’t see where I was going, but was able to keep enough pace on to keep the guys behind me. In some ways it was disappointing, we should have had a better result, but on top of that I’m rapt to get on the podium, we’ll certainly take those points and run.”
Shane raced from the back of the grid to 15th after having been spun on the restart:
“We had a really good day yesterday, worked through a lot, and then this morning the practice session wasn’t good, so we didn’t know where we were at, but qualifying was great. We put new tyres on and Shippy (Grant McPherson, Race Engineer) did some good calls and we qualified third. In the race we had a good battle at the start with Frosty (Mark Winterbottom) and I really enjoyed it. Then Scotty (McLaughlin) pitted so we covered him. We were just cruising along, the safety car came out, I got Scotty at the restart, then he just drilled me into turn two. That was a shame, it ruined our day, but he came straight down and apologised, so all good.”
