Preview: Winton 400

Winton 400 Fast Facts

  • Is there such a thing as a “home advantage” in motor racing? There are 18 drivers in this year’s field of 25 for whom Winton is the test track, but in the 20 races held from 2006 onward us Queenslanders are up on wins 11-9 on the locals.
  • A major milestone lies within Jamie’s reach this weekend. If he can claim two pole positions he’ll equal Peter Brock’s record for the most championship poles, claim three and he’ll beat it. Current score: J-Dub – 55, Brocky – 57.
  • Despite having only started from the front row of the grid once at Winton, which was when he claimed his only pole there in 2011, Craig has claimed four race wins and seven podium finishes.
  • The Safety Car is almost as popular at Winton as the race cars, having made appearances in 23 of the last 29 races since 2000.
  • Keep an eye out for The CEO in action this weekend in the Dunlop Series. Good old Winton was a happy hunting ground for Paul Dumbrell in the development category, having won here in 2002, the year claimed that very title.

What the Drivers Say

Lowndesy: “It’s great to have back-to-back weekends after Tasmania because very rarely do you get two weekends in a row that you get to race a car, so I’m looking forward to it.

“Winton is obviously a difficult track for different reasons, but luckily enough we’re coming out of Tasmania with two straight cars so hopefully the turnaround for the guys will be quite short.”

J-Dub: “It’s crazy having a matter of days for a turnaround, but we’re looking forward to it and hopefully we can carry our form from Tassie into Winton.

“Last year obviously wasn’t ideal for us with two DNFs, but the car feels awesome coming off the back of last weekend.

“I think this Super Sprint format works well and it’ll be interesting to see how everyone goes at Winton, which is of course the test track for a lot of teams.”
